Brightwaters is located on the south shore of Long Island in southwestern Suffolk County approximately 51 miles east of Manhattan and approximately 75 miles west of Montauk. Brightwaters offers picturesque canals, five lakes and tranquil neighborhoods. The lakes and pines are north of Montauk Highway, the canals section has docks, a gazebo and private beach south of Montauk. Brightwater’s close proximity to the Great South Bay and Robert Moses Causeway makes it the perfect home for the boater, fisherman, and beach lover alike.

Housing: Brightwater’s homes range in styles and size and include colonials, split levels, ranches, contemporaries, traditionals, capes and some tudors. Larger homes and some mansions are located near the Bay, south of Montauk and in the Lakes section north of Montauk. Transportation: Brightwaters can be reached by the Bay Shore stop on the Long Island Road’s Montauk branch.

Some Historical Information About Brightwaters, NY
Brightwaters was a planned dream of the four Ackerson brothers: Thomas , Charles , Henry and Pierre. They bought up several of the large beautiful estates from the Phelps, Lawrence, Beatty and Alexander families that were along the Bay and the lakes of West Bay Shore. In 1907, the purchase included about 1,200 acres and included the property once known as the Brightwaters Casino (northwest corner of Windsor Avenue and Montauk Highway), the focus of earlier social activity.
Work on the area started in 1908 and soon after beaches were established, the lakes were connected through channels and ornamental bridges, night lighting and stone pagodas were added.
The great and powerful and rich and famous came here to spend their fortunes building lavish estates to accommodate their lifestyles which included opulent mansion on the Great South Bay with manicured lanscapes, swimming pools, and tennis courts. The residents were frequently members of or had something to do with forming local yacht clubs because yachting / sailing were traditions passed through the families. The late 1800's - the early 1900's created new millionaires and with new and expnaded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build. Long Island residents included Whitney, Morgan, Pratt, Havemeyer, Belmont, Gulden, Guggenheim and they called in the greatest architects, landscapers, and decorators to create their dreams. They built here because it was in close to Manhattan, andwas a sportsman's paradise. There were foxhunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Babylon. Yachting and fishing in Babylon, Oakdale, Bay Shore and Great River and golfing in Sayville and Bay Shore.
