Some Historical Information About Cold Spring Harbor

The Society of the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities is located on the corner of Main Street and Shore Road. It features exhibits related to Long Island’s history and there is the Huntington Historic Preservation Commission.

Cold Spring Harbor was originally a whaling village, and then after the decline of whaling it became a resort town with several hotels. Today it is well known for the Cold Spring Laboratory (which is actually in neighboring Laurel Hollow). Cold Spring Harbor was part of the famed Gold Coast, which stretched from Great Neck to Huntington on Long Island’s North Shore. The great and powerful, rich and famous came here to spend their fortunes building lavish estates to accommodate their lifestyles which included opulent mansions resembling chateaus and castles with manicured landscapes, swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf courses. The late 1800’s – the early 1900’s created new millionaires with new and expanded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build.  Most of these powerful families came to Long Island because it was in close proximity to Manhattan, and was a sportsman’s paradise. There were foxhunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Wheatley Hills. Yachting and fishing could be found off the coast of Glen Cove, Sands Point, Kings Point, and Cold Spring Harbor. Golfing was popular in Brookville and North Hills.

Many of these estates are still private homes, some altered, some not. Some were adapted to reuse, others demolished, and some are open for tours or events.

Oheka Castle, as it is known today, was the magnificent estate of philanthropist and Financier Otto Herman Khan. It remains the second largest private home in the United States. The 127-room mansion is now a catering facility and hotel.
