The Hamlet of East Islip is located on the south shore of Long Island in southern Suffolk County approximately 72 miles east of Manhattan and approximately 57 miles west of Montauk. East Islip is bordered by the hamlets of Oakdale, Great River, Brentwood and Islip Terrace and Bay Shore. East Islip is close to both St. John’s University and Dowling College. East Islip’s close proximity to the Great South Bay and Robert Moses Causeway makes it the perfect home for the boater, fisherman, and beach lover alike.

Housing: East Islip’s home styles include capes, ranches, colonials, contemporaries, hi-ranches, traditionals and luxury homes mostly south of Montauk Highway, near the Bay.
Transportation: East Islip does have local bus transportation and is the Islip stop on the Long Island Road’s Montauk branch.
Shopping: East Islip has a lively downtown area with restaurants and shops and there are movie theaters in Islip and Sayville. The largest shopping is at the South Shore Mall, as well as The Arches and Bellport Outlets nearby.

Some Historical Information About East Islip, NY
East Islip was originally referred to as "east of Islip". This property was from the estate of William Nicoll, an English aristocrat who purchased the hamlet in 1693 to erect his family residence. Nicoll purchase 51,000 acres from Secatogues Indians, any area reaching west to Babylon, east to Bayport, and north to Lake Ronkonkoma. “Islip Grange” his mansion, was erected on the shoreline of the current area now Heckscher State Park.
East Islip, along with neighboring Bay Shore, Great River and Oakdale were mansion-heavy enclave of Long Island’s South Shore, home to world renowned families and old money.
Today, what remains are much smaller, yet exclusive and wealthy communities and a few larger estates. Many of the newer communities were built on the land belonging to former estates that were sold off: most notably the Percy G. Williams estate
East Islip was old money estate country. The great and powerful and rich and famous came here to spend their fortunes building lavish estates to accommodate their lifestyles which included opulent mansion on the Great South Bay with manicured landscapes, swimming pools, and tennis courts. The residents were frequently members of or had something to do with forming local yacht clubs because yachting / sailing were traditions passed through the families. The late 1800's - the early 1900's created new millionaires and with new and expanded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build. They built here because it was in close to Manhattan, and was a sportsman's paradise. There were foxhunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Babylon. Yachting and fishing in Babylon, Oakdale, Bay Shore and Great River and golfing in Sayville and Bay Shore.
Many of the old estates have been broken up and the land belonging to the former estates sold off. What does still remain are much smaller, yet exclusive and wealthy communities. Many of these newer communities were built on the land belonging to former estates that were sold off:
- Most notably the estate of vaudeville theatre owner Percy G. Williams, called Pineacres (later converted to a home for aged actors).
- Henry B. Hollins, a marine insurance broker, banker one time partner of JP Morgan owned Meadow Farms. The estate was then sold to aircraft engineer and founder of Lawrance Aeor Engine Co, Charles Lanier Lawrance and eventually the estate was developed into The Moorings.
- Brookwood Hall was originally the home of Harry K. Knapp (1903) and then sold to Francis B. Thorne, it then became the Orphan Asylum of Brooklyn (1942-1965).
- Hecksher State Park was once the estate of eccentric millionaire George C Taylor. It was named after August Hecksher who donated $250,000.00 to New York State so it could purchase the estate. Hewlett School was once the home of wealthy Louisiana planter Bradish Johnson.
