Some Historical Information About Jericho, NY
Jericho was originally part of the Robert Williams Plantation before it became the current suburban community we see today. The Maine Maid Inn was part of the Underground Railroad and had secret rooms in the attic for runaway slaves and The Meadowbrook Golf Club was the old S. Burrill estate called Jericho Farms. The great and powerful, rich and famous came here to spend their fortunes building lavish estates to accommodate their lifestyles which included opulent mansions resembling chateaus and castles with manicured landscapes, swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf courses. The late 1800’s – the early 1900’s created new millionaires with new and expanded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build. Most of these powerful families came to Long Island because it was in close proximity to Manhattan, and was a sportsman’s paradise. There were foxhunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Wheatley Hills. Yachting and fishing could be found off the coast of Glen Cove, Sands Point, Kings Point, Oyster Bay, Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor. Golfing was popular in Brookville, North Hills and Old Westbury. Many of these estates are still private homes, some altered, some not. Some were adapted to reuse, others demolished, and some are open for tours or events.
