Port Washington is said to be the model for the fictional East Egg in the F.Scott Fizgerald novel “The Great Gatsby”. Port Washington was part of the famed Gold Coast, which stretched from Great Neck to Huntington on Long Island’s North Shore. The great and powerful, rich and famous came here to spend their fortunes building lavish estates to accommodate their lifestyles which included opulent mansions resembling chateaus and castles with manicured landscapes, swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf courses. The late 1800’s – the early 1900’s created new millionaires with new and expanded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build. The names of residents included Whitney, Morgan, Pratt, Belmont, Khan, Gould, Havemeyer and Guggenheim and they called in the greatest architects, landscapers, and decorators to create their dreams. Some mansions included entire rooms, portions of buildings or structures that were dismantled in different parts of Europe and reassembled here, on Long Island.
Most of these powerful families came to Long Island because it was in close proximity to Manhattan, and was a sportsman’s paradise. There were foxhunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Wheatley Hills. Yachting and fishing could be found off the coast of Glen Cove, Sands Point, Kings Point, and Oyster Bay. Golfing was popular in Brookville and North Hills.
Many of these estates are still private homes, some altered, some not. Some were adapted to reuse, others demolished, and some are open for tours or events.
