Some Historical Information About Sands Point, NY
Sands Point was part of the famed Gold Coast, which stretched from Great Neck to Huntington on Long Island’s North Shore. The Guggenheims as well as other great and powerful, rich and famous came here to spend their fortunes building lavish estates to accommodate their lifestyles which included opulent mansions resembling chateaus and castles with manicured landscapes, swimming pools, tennis courts, and golf courses. The late 1800’s – the early 1900’s created new millionaires with new and expanded industries and many of them came to Long Island to build. Most of these powerful families came to Long Island because it was in close proximity to Manhattan, and was a sportsman’s paradise. There were foxhunts and horseback riding in Old Westbury and Wheatley Hills. Yachting and fishing could be found off the coast of Glen Cove, Sands Point, Kings Point, Bay Shore, Babylon and Oakdale. Golfing was popular in Brookville, North Hills and Sayville.
Many of these estates are still private homes, some altered, some not. Some were adapted to reuse, others demolished, and some are open for tours or events.
- The Sands Point Preserve occupies the land that once was three Guggenheim estates. Today, one mansion, Falaise, the 26-room Gothic chateau, is open for tours while the other 40-room castle-like Hempstead House is only open to host events.
- The only structure still standing from Beacon Towers, the former estate of Alva Vanderbilt Belmont (1853-1933) estate, is the gatehouse (private residence) and some iron gates and stone walls. The 140-room medieval castle is rumored to be one of the inspirations for “The Great Gatsby”.
- The Chimneys, now the Community Synagogue (private), was once the home of socialite, Bettie Fleischmann Holmes. The family founded Fleischmann’s Yeast.
- Villa Carola, now known as the Village Club at Sands Point (private), was a Guggenheim estate. First owned by Isaac and then by Solomon (who re-named it Trillora Court).
